You can have a look at our introduction below:
Differences between food waste and food loss
These things may sound the same, but nothing is further from the truth. Food loss indicates food that was still ready for consumption, was lost due to certain circumstances. Food waste can be caused by several factors, such as when food is leftover from a meal and is thrown away.
Research Evaluation
We kept track of all the foods we wasted in a week. Here are our evaluations:
Conclusion Mare
My family tries to make sure that we have a food waste as small as possible. If we have a bit of dinner left, enough to put in the fridge, we eat it later for lunch. Sometimes, if a product is outdated, we still taste and smell to see if it is edible. But if it isn’t, we throw it away.
If we can’t eat it, but the chickens or birds in our garden can, we lay it outside for them to eat (think of rotting fruit, old bread etc.). Sometimes, we also give something to our dog.
The funny thing is that my mother still wanted to eat the couscous, even though it was cooked into mash. This was only because otherwise ‘it will be written down on the list’. This diary really makes my family aware of the amount of food that we throw away. But: my dad just threw the couscous in the bin after dinner, instead of giving it to the chickens.
Conclusion Kaede
I havent wasted any foods this week. this is something that everyone should do so we can save the planet. What i think is the best strategy for this is to only buy foods that are necessary. overwise you’ll pollute the environment. i honestly think that people who waste foods should think better about what they are doing.
Conclusion Noah
Throughout his week, i have had low food wastage. I have not thrown away entire meals and only some leftovers that were partially consumed already and not suitable for freezing in and eating on another moment. All other food has been frozen in and kept for another day.
Conclusion Olger
If something is expired we will of course throw it in the bin but we try to limit this by buying only the things we are sure we will eat within that date this way you do not throw away to much also when we have foodstuffs leftover we freeze them and keep them for fast consumption.

Interviews
Interview with a member of the board of the school: Olger
Question 1 Does all the food purchased get consumed. Question 2 What happens to expired or leftover food. Question 3 Are a lot of staff/personnel from this school involved in the management of food waste. Question 4 Is your management or are you proud of the performance of the school The Answers:
Pretty much all the food purchased by our school is consumed The little amount of food that is sometimes leftover is either thrown away or brought to a Food Bank The cafeteria and janitors are seperate, but if any staff or personnel have any tips they are welcomed. The ones who have the biggest say are in the end the janitors. The school is proud of what it has accomplished in the field of food wastage prevention. Pictures of food (wastage) at school: |
As you can see, a lot of food gets wasted at school, which isn't really neccesary. Whether it's because you don't want to eat your lunch or you dont have time to eat it, save it up!!
Interview with a manager of the supermarket: Kaede and Mare
We chose Albert heijn middelburg. 0118 642 121 is the phone number. We asked for an email adress: [email protected]. We sent an email to this adress and are waiting for an answer. He did not give permission to publish his photograph. Question 1. Do you consider your supermarket to be a low-waste company? Question 2. What happens to the products that have been brought back to the supermarket, or with products that are almost or slightly outdated? Question 3. Where do the products go when they are thrown away? Question 4. What happens when a product is broken? (e.g: a cookie box) Question 5. How much money is lost by food wastage? Question 6. Does the Jumbo do something against this? |
Answers:
Bruce said: ‘I think that every supermarket has a high food wastage. I think that there are a lot of solutions found. For example, with the products brought back to the supermarket, and are not broken or outdated, they will go back into the shop. If a product is almost outdated, they get 35% reduction of the price. The products that are outdated or broken go back to the distribution centre.’ He did not know for sure what happened with these products afterwards. ‘If a cookie box is broken, the cookies are not sold. They will then be brought to a food Bank. So over all, we do throw away too much food. We cannot say how much money is lost with this. When the food is still edible, there can be reduction, or it can be brought to the food Bank.

Interview with expert on waste and effects on the climate: Noah
Question 1. What are the consequences of schools and other public buildings wasting food?
Climate expert from renewi: The remaining food will be taken away in separate bags, this remaining food will be dumped in a natural garbage storage. The food will rot away and no remains will be left.
Question 2 What are current methods that can help the environment?
Climate expert from renewi: Renewi stands for recycling, renewi recycles a lot of products but food is not one of them for logical reasons.
Question 3 What methods will be available in the near future?
No specific methods will be available in the near future, but we are constantly working on improving our current methods. With our recycling program being more efficient every year.
Question 4 What would you want to change about the current waste system of schools?
Climate expert from renewi: In my opinion our current methods are effiecent enough for the comming period.

Conclusion Noah
After the interview i had gathered the information, unfortunately the information did not contain much we could use for further evaluation. The website of the company was pretty useful too, we managed to get some more information from there. Overall the information we gathered from the company was very useful to our overall project.
Conclusion Kaede/Mare
We have gathered info about the albert heijn. This contained the information we needed to answer the questions in full detail. We got all the information from a friendly man who gave us his email address so we could ask the questions. all the information was very useful for our project and overall the evaluation. The answers were, on the other hand, of the ideal image, and were not fully answered. For example, the person was not allowed to say how much money was left.

Second diary
Tips / what are we going to do
After conducting the interviews and doing research, we came up with these tips on saving food. We are going to see how useful they are, by keeping track of a diary again. After this we will make sure that pictures are added, and that the research question is covered. The tips directly below were in the document, and after that we thought of tips ourselves.
1. Start small
Take smaller portions of food at home or share a dish at a restaurant.
2. Leave nothing behind
Keep your leftovers for another meal or use them in a different dish
3. Buy what you need
Be smart with your shopping list. Make a list of things you need and stick to it. Don't buy more than you can use.
4. Dont be projudiced
Buy "ugly" or different shaped fruits and vegetables that are just as good but look a bit different.
5. Check your fridge
Store foods between 1 and 5 degrees celsius for maximum freshness and shelf life.
6. First in, first out
Try using produce that you had bought previously and, when you stack up your fridge and cupboards, move older products to the front and place newer ones in the back.
7. Use dates
Use by” indicates a date by which the food is safe to be eaten, while “best before” means the food’s quality is best prior to that date, but it is still safe for consumption after it.
8. Compost
Some food waste might be unavoidable, so why not set up a compost bin!
9. Donate the surplus
Sharing is caring.

3 Tips for reducing waste at school
- always throw your rubbish in the bin and remind others
- walk around the hallways with the bin so that people are reminded and always throw their trash right in
- clean the school by picking up trash from the floor
3 Tips for reducing food wastes in supermarkets
- Yesterday I went to a supermarket, and there was a small box with ‘products with the date of today’ With reduction. This is a very useful tip, as this may lead to people buying these products. A lot of people do not buy these products and just leave them in the supermarket until the product is expired.
- The personnel in the supermarket mostly do not see it in time when a product is (almost) outdated. There could be extra people hired to look after the date of the products, and bring products to the reduction-fridge on time.
- If someone sees an outdated product, and reports this to the manager, they will get the product for free. This will make sure that these products are taken and not thrown away later
- There could also be a box (outside or inside) the supermarket with products from which the casing is broken, but the products are still good.
- The contact between food banks and supermarkets should be stronger, so that people from the food bank come and check the reduction box too.
2 Tips for reducing food waste at home
- Make food portions for what you need, dont make more than you need
- If you have food left wich can be consumed at later times it is advised to freeze in the leftovers, and eventually e.g in day in the month you take a day were you eat the leftovers gathered throughout the last period
Rating tips
- Kaede: I think that these tips will be really helpful, but are also not needed for most people. Most people already try to reduce food wastage as much as possible. I think that most people got told by their parents that they shouldn’t waste food. But even so, the tips are very useful for people who haven’t tried to reduce food wastage.
Tip 2: This is very important as leftovers don’t taste that bad and you reduce food wastage by a ton.
Tip 3: This can be hard for people, especially when supermarkets advertise nice foods that you don’t really need, but really want.
Tip 4: This is very simple but very effective. Most foods that look disformed or weird still taste the same, and if no one buys them, they’ll get thrown away
Tip 5: This is the average temperature to keep your food in. You should also try to keep your fridge closed when you don’t use it, to not spoil the food early on.
Tip 6: This will be really effective, as you won’t spoil food often.
Tip 7: This is very smart. If you eat the food even if it’s not at it’s best, you’ll still have food to eat and won’t have to throw away anything.
Tip 8: Using a compost bin is really necessary. You reduce the amount of food wastage by a ton.
Tip 9: This helps other people in need and you won’t waste food.
- Noah: 1.
- Olger: Tip 1: this is really helpful by using smaller plates and eating less there is less food to be wasted
Tip 3: this can be very difficult because things are not often sold in the portion you need it in but in this case use tip 2
Tip 4: this tip is a very nice concept because if you take it the store doesn't have to throw it away and since other customers probably will not do the same it's good to be the one doing it
Tip 5: this one's for starters it's just a setting to be changed once everyone should take the one minute to do this and on large scale it could help
Tip 6: this is one to get used to it will help you a lot and you will not nearly find as many rotten products in your fridge as before
Tip 7: this is something you ought to understand and it's something that will sometimes just decide what you want to eat
Tip 8: if you can not get used to saving food you can recycle it instead!
Tip 9: this is the last option with food if you can not eat it all invite over some friends
These tips are all really good and none of them need to be underestimated because all little things can help in the fight against food waste
- Mare: I think that these tips will work really well for people who are not keeping an eye on their food waste yet. But for people and families like me, they do not really add anything. Most of it is already in use for us. I chose to rate these tips for people who do not keep an eye on their food waste yet.
tip 2: 4 Most people will just throw leftovers away, while there are very nice things you can make with them.
tip 3: 5 I reckon that this will make sure that the other tips are not needed.
tip 4: 5 This is a good tip which saves a lot of food.
tip 5: 2 This is the ‘normal’ temperature for fridges, so I don’t think it will really help.
tip 6: 2 This is an unnecessary tip, because if you prevent stacking up your fridge it will be even better. Once you make a shopping list, you take the things you still have into account and make sure you also use these. Then stacking your fridge won’t be needed.
tip 7: 5 This is really important according to me. Once you throw away food because of the date, while it is still edible is completely wasting. The dates should be clear.
tip 8: 5 Moldy tangerines were on my waste-list a lot. A compost bin would have helped to still make these useful. This also helps when you have a garden.
tip 9: 3 This is a good tip.
Evidence of communication
Do you think that your school has special methods for reducing waste and which ones are these?
They all get food from the school, so everyone gets the same foods, which will make it less likely for them to waste food. They also try to motivate students to not throw away food.
Have you found out about ideas that can help to reduce food waste in the future?
we couldn't understand them very well
The videoconference went well, but it was not what we expected. The wifi connection was not that good, so we couldn’t hear what our counterparts said that well. Next to that, our counterparts did not have any questions for us. There was, according to us, no real contact.

Reflection
- Mare: When this project was announced, I was really excited. I like communicating with people all over the world, and sustainability is interesting too. I also liked the way of researching: conducting interviews is a great way to obtain information. But I did not like my group, let’s be honest about that. They seemed to expect that I was the leader, and kept waiting to do something until I said something to them. I did not like that and next to that the group effort was pretty low according to me. I was also a little disappointed in the communication we had with the people from India, because there was none. The only contact we had was during the videoconference, where we asked some questions, and that was it. They had no questions for us. I would have liked it if there would have been more interaction in the WhatsApp group. But after all, I am still proud of my work, and I am happy that my team did succeed in working together. On that side I did learn a lot!
- Kaede: At the beginning of the project I wasn’t very excited. I am not a very social person when it comes to group projects. I didn’t think that the project was going to be very fun, nor am I good at geography. Over the first few weeks things went pretty well. But slowly but surely we started to have communication problems, people not working etc. And since I’m not a good listener, I didn’t know what to do most of the time. But things worked out pretty well. Since I was in charge of the website, I didn't have to do most of the work. Don’t get me wrong, I love doing projects. But since I’m always really distracted it was hard for me to know what to do all the time. After another month or so, we had the video conference. And I’ll be honest, I couldn’t understand a single word the other group was saying. And this wasn’t because it was boring or anything, it was because I just couldn’t understand them. We also had some connection issues, but we were barely affected by this. Over these last few weeks, we’ve been trying to finish the project. In fact, we’re busy with it right now! Overall I would say that the experience of making this project was pretty ok. Even though we didn’t make the best team, we did eventually succeed to finish it off.
- Olger This was the project i was looking forward to because it is rarely at school you find something you are truly passionate about further into the project it was very interesting because we learned a lot we could have worked better but i had a good time in this project there was no time i really felt off about this project and it went very well in our group the communication was poor but we dealt with it, it is still a little bit disappointing that we did not come in contact with the indians more.
- Noah
Comparison
At the moment that we looked at the website of our counterparts in India, we were a little disappointed. We would have liked to see some more: only an introduction video was visible. This meant that we could not really compare our website.
We learned a lot about working together and planning ahead. We were all not very happy with the group, but we somehow did manage to do this project. About saving food we learned that it is actually very easy to not waste food, but that there is still a lot of food wasted, mostly for supermarkets etc.. And we got to know that school already does pretty much to prevent food waste, like donating food to food banks.
